Clothing reflects cultural foundations, and its changes indicate fundamental social transformations. The Indian subcontinent during the Mughal era, due to cultural plurality and climatic diversity, featured a wide variety of garments. In this period, the accumulation of wealth among the upper classes on the one hand, and the economic poverty of the lower classes on the other, created a deep gap and led to the formation of two distinct styles of dress – a phenomenon also reflected in the reports of European travelers. The main research question is: What was the status of clothing in the Mughal era of India based on the accounts of European travelers? Using a descriptive-analytical approach, this study examines the hypothesis that clothing styles during this period were influenced by two distinct patterns: 'courtly' (stemming from the wealth and extravagance of the rulers) and 'subaltern' (driven by climatic necessity and economic hardship). The research findings indicate that the courtly pattern followed an experimentalist approach, while the dress of the lower classes adhered to a static traditionalism.
